South Lake Tahoe for the Weekend

Jul 20, 2015

This past weekend was our last 3-day weekend that we will be traveling around California, other than our trip to LA before we head back east.

This would definitely be categorized under "first world problems," but leading up to the weekend, we were getting a little tired of traveling. In case you didn't know, California isn't the cheapest place and doesn't have the most pleasant traffic. Those things were kind of starting to wear us down, so we were considering skipping our original plans to go to Lake Tahoe. I'm so glad we didn't! We both really enjoyed the area and were happy to be in a place with lots of trees, mountains and perfect weather.

A sneak peek at the lake

Now, I'm realizing that I'll be sad when we won't be able to do a trip like this any old weekend. Lake Tahoe is exactly the type of place I would want to visit regularly if I lived within driving distance. There are tons of activities year-round, and there are several different towns and areas around the lake you can visit.

We wanted to do a hike to the lake, and of course, wanted to bring Sammie. I found a hike about 30 minutes away from our hotel in Nevada called Skunk Harbor. I'm not sure why it's called that, but it was a nice hike! It was only a little over 3 miles total, which was perfect since we wanted to spend time on the beach. The trail was originally part of a railroad built in the 1870s that carried lumber to Virginia City, MT, which meant the trail was nice and wide.

This hike isn't part of any official state or national park. It's kind of off the radar and doesn't have any regulations, so I knew it would be popular with dogs. We were both a little worried about how Sammie would behave, since she's kind of socially inept, to put it nicely. Overall, she was surprisingly well-behaved! She became really attached to a little poodle mix dog and its family, which was really funny.

More scenes from the beach:

If we had known better, we would have brought bathing suits, towels, etc. There were a few groups and families who had either anchored their boats or walked down and were having a beach day. It almost felt like the Caribbean with the clear water!

We wanted to get the full experience of being on the lake, so we rented a boat in the afternoon. We rode to Emerald cove, which is supposedly the most photographed place in Tahoe.

The water color was gorgeous, and we rode by Vikingsholm, which is another popular attraction in Tahoe. I'm not quite sure what it's all about, honestly, but it's some type of historic castle-looking house. The lighting made it impossible to photograph, but it was cool to see. Overall, we had a great time in Tahoe!

In other news, we have been going into San Francisco on our off weekends. It's not really enough for me to make a whole post about, but it's been fun. We got a burrito from El Farolito, which is one of the Mission's original burrito spots. It was probably the best burrito I've ever had.  I also went in one weeknight to meet a friend for dinner. I have to say, going on weekdays is much better for traffic since most people are leaving the city. I rode right in with minimal stop-and-go traffic (there's always some) and found a parking spot right in front of the Ferry Building. The weather has also become a little better, with less fog. It's been nice to actually see the city!
